THE REPORTER | A number of Rohingya refugees were observed in the waters of South Aceh Regency, Friday, October 18, 2024.
The Rohingya immigrants were observed 2.5 miles from the coast. They boarded a fishing boat from South Aceh.
The Commander of the South Aceh Sea, West Java confirmed that there was a fishing boat carrying Rohingya refugees.
He admitted that he did not yet know how many Rohingya there were. This is because they have not been allowed to land on the coast of South Aceh.
“They (Rohingya refugees) are still at sea about 2.5 miles away, they have not been allowed to land,” said West Java when confirmed.
West Java said that the boat boarded by the Rohingya refugees belonged to fishermen from South Aceh.
“The boat belongs to fishermen here (South Aceh). We also don’t know how they got on the boat,” he said.
Currently, his party is on its way to the Rohingya boat to provide assistance. This is because the boat has not received permission to dock.
“Right now we can only give them assistance,” he said.[AR]
